Ericka Gibson, M.D., M.P.H., is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist with the Southeast Permanente Medical Group at Kaiser Permanente in Atlanta, Georgia. As the physician program director for perinatal safety and quality, she works to ensure that patients receive the highest quality maternity care through data collection, data analysis, program design and implementation, protocol development and dissemination, quality improvement, and safety systems oversight.

Dr. Gibson leads the Perinatal Patient Safety team at the Southeast Permanente Medical Group, establishing the organization’s maternal health high-priority quality initiatives. She worked with other maternal-child health leaders to analyze research on maternal health, postpartum care, remote patient monitoring for hypertension and diabetes, social determinants of health, and health equity to create the Cocoon Pregnancy Care Model. The Cocoon Pregnancy Care Model is an integrative, multidisciplinary program and was designed from best practices and expert opinion to optimize maternal outcomes and reduce health disparities. The model ensconces the birthing person within a multifaceted program that incorporates evidence-based clinical care, data-driven quality initiatives, remote patient monitoring platforms, and dedicated perinatal support for mental health, case management, and other social health needs.

As a member of the Kaiser Permanente National Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC), Dr. Gibson has worked to establish ways to embed equity by advocating for the collection of race-stratified data and incorporating the use of discrimination evaluation tools in case reviews. She leads the Kaiser Georgia MMRC, whose primary goal is to identify interventions across multiple levels (patient, provider, healthcare system, and community) that could prevent future maternal mortality. Recommendations from the MMRC have culminated in key maternal health initiatives, such as dedicated perinatal mental health support and systemwide changes to improve access to care.

Dr. Gibson is a practicing obstetrician-gynecologist and sees patients at the Cumberland Medical Office building, one of many Kaiser Permanente locations across metropolitan Atlanta. Dr. Gibson has hospital privileges at both Northside Atlanta Hospital and Emory Decatur Hospital.

Dr. Gibson received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish language with a minor in biochemistry at Spelman College. She earned her M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and earned her M.P.H. at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health as a Sommer Scholar, with a concentration in health policy and women’s and reproductive health. She completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Gibson joined the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force in January 2025.
